Derren Brown uses a handshake induction to ‘hypnotise’ him, which is real. However, I would say it was just for show.

I didn’t say “magic” and I didn’t say “impressive” either. Apart from that, it was a generalisation about tricks like this, in reply to someone else.

The important point is that respectable != impressive, I might be impressed by someones ability to lift a certain weight, to call it respectable is to miss the mark unless the reason I respect things is based on physical prowess.

Of course it does matter how he does it, not only so that as pedestrians we can try to stop it from happening to us (most particularly at a malevolent level), but it matters simply because certain techniques are more respectable than others, if it was “mirrors” or “rigged” then that wouldn’t be as respectable as suggestion etc.

all that matters is that he does it, and that he is able to make it entertaining!
