Derren Brown NLP

by admin on May 6, 2009

kerkkila asked:

Derren uses NLP (Neuro-linguistic programming) to make psychologist Dr. Arthur Anderson do what he wants. First they play word disassociations and then Derren guesses his secret image. Wonderful! Hope you enjoy! The doc is amazed and so am I.

*yawn* Cars, Cats, Houses, Trees are some of the most drawn images when you ask a person on the spot to draw something. It means nothing more than that you are just human.

I am amazed that you guys fall for this word game explanation. Derren says in the beginning magic….. We just don’t see what has happened completely we have a different view of the picture. In NLP terms we have a different frame than the shrink has.

Ok wow. I followed along with the second part (i was bored) and my “secret picture” was a big arrow pointing up.

I didn’t draw anything but my first reaction was to draw a tree….just like the one he drew…weird.

Thought process:

Eat + variation (ing)
human instinctive dissociation – swim or water
he heard a eat in a context so feels obliged to put dissociation in a certain context
water + variation (ski)

Well I’d definitely miss that one, if that was what DB was going for.

As for the secret picture, the second thing DB asked the psychologist was “picture” and the doctor replied ‘horse’. When asking for teh secret picture, DB says two big NLP things that really get to the doctor:
1. “I want you to PICTURE something in your mind for me, as long as it’s a SIMPLE and RECOGNIZABLE thing.” (He also says “really try to CATCH ME OUT” which could be why the doctor drew a tree, but I’m thinking that was more not intended then an embedded message)

First of all, although he was asked to choose things that had little to no relation to what DB was saying (suit), it’s too hard to really think of something completely different (you wear suits to work, and you love lunch breaks at work). Food is one of the first things that came to mind also because we think about it a bit too much(3+ meals a day). Also DB saying for us to keep it “simple” makes us think ‘banana’ and not ‘cheeseburger’.

Okay guys… I got some ideas of how Derren Brown pulled this off so nicely.

2. DB tells him to imagine the image he has in his head very vividly and bright, so when the doctor draws a picture that is supposed to have little to do with the secret picture, the secret image has much to do with the drawn image (Cats climb trees, they’re an animal, and they’re simple and recognizable. Whether or not the ‘CATCH ME OUT’ embedded language had anything to do with choose a tree and cat, I’m not sure.

this is just fucking sick, as he finished talking to the shrink, I instantly tought of a cat and a car, and then a picture of a tree just popped into my mind, and i changed it to cat and tree. When the shrink turned over the tree, I was scared, and when Derren said “it’s probably not a dogg…” well that just freaked me out!I know it’s pure psychology but it’s still creepy!
