I dabbled with NLP when i was a teenager. I’ve
no internal visual reference and I seem to be reversed so it never really worked for me. However, it’s amazing to see the techniques used on someone so easily manipulated. You could do some real good with that stuff:)

For all the people saying it’s ‘Derren’ not ‘Darren’, it doesn’t really matter. They sound the same, Derren used to go by the name of Darren, and no one knows his real name anyway. Get over it, it’s not that big a deal.

Very nice video. I did thoroughly enjoy it, and you have a good voice for these such things.
Much appreciated.

Derren’s new book, out early 2009, contains a substantial chapter on NLP and specifically the Swish Pattern. It’s called ‘How I fooled the Nation’ (London: HW Press, 2009; ISBN: 9780873643078, £19.85). The NLP chapter can be found on pp 371-392. There are also a number of entries under NLP and e.g. Swish Pattern in the index.

i appreciate your explanation but i have to say we’re missing a whole lot of the prep for this clip. after having confirmed the switch has taken, he asks “you said you have your car outside” – a conversation we didn’t see & ‘hey presto’ the car is a colour affected by the switch. i think your correct when you point out the crucial flick & hand movement made as the belief switch is set in place is probably part of hypnosis we never got to see

Hehe, thought that too… XD

But in the end I don’t think it would make any difference… It is so embedded in people that when the top light at a crossover blinks, you stay still, and then when the bottom light blinks, Then you can go…
Even if the colors were completely changed, the positioning of the lights would still be in charge of our perception… :) At least that’s my theory…

I don’t get though, why is red suddenly “black”…? Did he mention the word black at all…?

anouther great explination of the different techniques, I wonder if you know who Derren learned this from…seems like he has some Erikson background, besides Bandler and Grinder.

Hi Linds,

When you say same technique, I assume you mean visual swish? There are some similarities used in terms of the technique of a hard sell, but this approach is quite different.

Best wishes, Tom.

Interesting… Me too I am a hypnotist/mentalist and NLP practioner. However I have not found a magic method that allows people to say red is black without stooging. I have however done this effect using NLP techniques and “standard” hypnosis. So in this case I think magic is not used however, when you can proof me wrong…

The BMX bike thing that is dressed up as NLP but indeed a nice and very simple piece of dual reality and switches (you know what I mean).

because yellow is to red
as red is to black.
So when she thought that real yellow was red. anything darker is dark enough to be considered black.
or perhaps the absense of color theory u have. ;-p

This video is fantastic, I feel I’ve learnt so much about people in the last hour! however, i was wondering why the woman said the red card was black? my theory is that Derren only made her transition go up to the colour red. He did not transfer what her percpeption of the colour red was to another colour. Therefore, when she sees any colours after red, her mind sees it as an absence of colour, ie. black! of course i may be completely wrong, maybe it is not even significant. Good video though!
